What is a “Community Workshop”?

Unlike a traditional lecture or seminar-style class, the primary goal of the writing workshop is to offer writers the chance to submit their original work to a group of their peers and receive feedback. Through active writing and revision, workshop participants will construct, or improve upon, their writing practices.

The workshop is not only a forum for sharing creative work, it is a place for writers to engage critically with their work and their peers’ work in the same manner they would with any published manuscript. Think of the writing workshop as an invaluable opportunity for your craft to come to life in the hands of other readers and writers. We know sharing your work can be scary at first, but it’s why we’re here to help!

How is the Community Workshop different from a college Creative Writing course?

The dynamic of each community workshop is never the same. Each hosts a variety of students who vary in age, background, and writing experience–atypical in a college course. The community workshop participant, being motivated to take part in the workshop without any influence from the academy, can offer interpretations and advice that may be unavailable in a classroom of college students.

Above all else, the focus of a community workshop is to foster a new group of writers who have a space (we like to call it a “haven”) to share their work, and also learn methods for peer editing and reading as a writer–a skill set all participants can take with them after the class has ended, and hopefully with each other if relationships are formed.

How does private consulting work?

One-on-one consultations with one of our instructors are shaped primarily by your current wants and needs. Whether in person in Palm Beach County with Nico, or by email with Jamie, we’re here to help you with your writing. We’ve worked with students on improving individual poems, short stories, complete memoirs, and everything in between. Contact us with a description of your writing goals and what brought you to our website to receive tailored information and suggestions regarding one-one-one consulting. We recognize the trust a writer must have for his/her reviewer(s), and are fortunate to be experienced in communicating honest, unbiased and professional advice and suggestions.

What if I have never written creatively before?

Our workshops aim to provide unique group experiences for all levels of writers at all stages of their writing journey. It doesn’t matter if you have writing ready for review, or not. Whatever our relationship with you, know you’ll receive personalized lessons and feedback on drafting, revising, publishing, and whatever else you’d like us to cover.
